KDA Opens Performer Applications for 10th Anniversary of Books in Motion®: DANCE + LITERACY Program

Kern Dance Alliance (KDA) is thrilled to announce the opening of performer applications for the 2026 season of Books in Motion®: DANCE + LITERACY, marking the program’s 10th anniversary of inspiring young readers in Kern County. Since its launch in 2016, Books in Motion has reached nearly 20,000 children, gifted close to 15,000 free books, and transformed literacy education by blending storytelling with dance to combat summer learning loss and foster creativity.

Books in Motion is an award-nominated, evidence-based summer reading initiative presented by KDA in partnership with Kern County Library and local dance organizations. The program brings children’s books to life through narration, dance performances, choreography, and hands-on crafts, aligning with Common Core Standards for Reading Literature in grades K-3. By engaging multiple learning modalities (visual, aural, verbal, and physical) the program motivates children to connect with stories, build confidence, and develop critical thinking skills. This is especially vital in Kern County, where only 28% of 3rd graders meet or exceed English Language Arts standards, and significant portions of adults face literacy challenges.

In celebration of a decade of community impact, KDA invites dance organizations and performers to apply as collaborators for the 2026 tour, scheduled from July 6 to August 1. Applicants can propose a beloved children’s book suitable for K-3 audiences or select from a provided bibliography. Selected performers will narrate and perform the stories, teach child-friendly choreography, and deliver at least four performances across Kern County libraries, schools, and community centers.

“We are honored to celebrate 10 years of Books in Motion, a program that has not only boosted literacy but also united our community through the arts,” said Andrea Hansen, Executive Director of Kern Dance Alliance. “This milestone is a testament to the dedication of our partners, sponsors, dance artists, educators, libraries, volunteers, and families. We look forward to welcoming new performers to continue this legacy of joyful learning.”

Application Details:

• Eligibility: Applicants must be KDA Organization Members (non-members can join at kerndance.org/membership).

• How to Apply: Submit via the online form at kerndance.org/BIM.

• Timeline: Applications open Friday, February 20, 2026, and close Friday, March 20, 2026. Selected performers will be notified by Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

• Requirements: Performers must provide clear narration and theatrics, create injury-free choreography tied to the book’s theme, supply high-quality costumes, offer a portable sound system, provide proof of insurance, attend a mandatory information meeting on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Beale Memorial Library, and allow program administrators to observe a June rehearsal.

• Benefits: Selected participants receive an honorarium, marketing exposure to over 5,000 attendees, features on the Books in Motion website and KDA social media, inclusion in press releases and promotional materials, and opportunities for local media appearances. The program remains free to families, supported by generous donations, ensuring equitable access to arts-based literacy for all Kern County children.

KDA ANNOUNCES 2026 NATIONAL HONORS SOCIETY FOR DANCE ARTS INDUCTION PROGRAM

Kern Dance Alliance (KDA), an established Secondary Chapter of the National Honors Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA), is excited to provide access to this prestigious program for 9th–12th grade students studying dance who meet national induction requirements. NHSDA, a program of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO), recognizes outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement among dance students in public and private schools, dance studios, cultural centers, and performing arts organizations. Since its launch for secondary students in 2005, NHSDA has inducted thousands of students nationwide, promoting high standards in dance education and offering national prestige. Students interested in becoming inducted in 2026 are invited to learn more about the induction requirements and apply. To qualify for induction, students must maintain a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and earn at least 30 points through a structured system that rewards dance activities, such as classes, rehearsals, performances, choreography, teaching, and leadership roles. At least 20 points must come from participation in
chapter-related programs. Full details on the point system and rubrics are available on the KDA NHSDA webpage. Inductees receive valuable benefits, including a certificate of recognition, gold honors pin, blue and white honor cord, and medallion for graduation ceremonies. Membership also enhances college applications, provides leadership opportunities through chapter activities, and qualifies students for scholarships like the NHSDA Artistic Merit, Leadership, and Academic Achievement Award. Kern County students who attend a high school without a dance program, or whose high school or private dance studio is not a current NHSDA chapter, are eligible for induction through KDA’s chapter. This inclusive model expands access to national recognition and ensures that motivated students are not limited by institutional barriers. “We’re thrilled to open NHSDA induction to all deserving Kern County students, helping them shine on a national stage and fostering their growth as artists and leaders,” said Marcie Hronis, KDA President.

About “Tiler Peck: Suspending Time”: Tiler Peck: Suspending Time Teaser Film

“Tiler Peck: Suspending Time” offers a deeply personal look at one of ballet’s most celebrated artists as she faces a career crossroads. Following a series of life-altering events—including a major injury, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a personal loss—New York City Ballet prima ballerina Tiler Peck is forced to reckon with the unknown and reimagine her relationship to dance, to her body, and to herself.

A production of Late Autumn Productions, Tiler Peck: Suspending Time is directed by Alex Ramsey and produced by Eric Cook and Garen Scribner with Tiler Peck as an executive producer, the film follows Peck over the course of six years, capturing rehearsals, performances, and quiet moments of reflection as she fights to return stronger, not just as a prima ballerina, but also as a choreographer and creative force.

After Peck returns to the stage, she takes on the toughest creative challenge of her career: a prestigious invitation to choreograph for the New York City Ballet, culminating in debut performances set to a concerto by Francis Poulenc.

Featuring original work by Peck alongside choreography from Alonzo King, William Forsythe, George Balanchine, and Christopher Wheeldon, the film blends vulnerability and resilience with artistic brilliance.

Kern Dance Alliance proudly provided funding for the project with a variety of local and national sponsors.

About “XO Ballerina Big Sis”:

“XO Ballerina Big Sis,” Peck’s newest book launching worldwide on October 21, will make its in-person debut at the event, providing fans an opportunity to purchase through locally-owned Russo’s Book Store and have it signed by the author.

Filled with practical advice, how-tos, insider tips, and lots of love, the book shares Tiler Peck’s insights and hard-won knowledge about everything from the best warm-up exercises to finding the perfect leotard, dealing with burnout, and learning how to dance for yourself. It is perfect for tweens taking ballet classes as well as aspiring ballerinas everywhere.

KERN DANCE ALLIANCE AWARDED NATIONAL HONORS

Kern Dance Alliance (KDA), a leading nonprofit arts advocacy organization in California’s Central Valley, has been selected to receive the 2025 Outstanding Dance Education Organization Award from the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO). The award will be presented during NDEO’s virtual awards ceremony on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. ET, recognizing KDA’s exceptional contributions to dance education and community impact. In addition to the award presentation, KDA will participate as panelists in the “Empowering Excellence in Dance Education” session at NDEO’s National Conference in Detroit, MI, on October 4, 2025.

The NDEO Outstanding Dance Education Organization Award honors non-profit or private sector organizations established for at least five years that have made unique and impactful contributions to their communities through creative and scholarly efforts in dance education. KDA, founded in 2015, stood out for its innovative programs that integrate dance with education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, serving nearly 200,000 individuals and investing $5 million dollars across Kern County and the Southern San Joaquin Valley.

Hailed as one of the most prestigious honors in the arts sector, this award shines a national spotlight on California’s Central Valley, an often-overlooked and underserved region where the arts are not as prevalent.  By elevating KDA’s work, it underscores how arts organizations in underrepresented areas can drive economic prosperity, attract talent, boost community resilience, and inspire greater investment and vibrancy.

“KDA is deeply honored to receive this national recognition from NDEO, which validates our decade-long mission to make dance accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or background,” said Andrea Hansen, Executive Director of Kern Dance Alliance. “This award celebrates not just our team of dedicated volunteers, but the entire community we’ve empowered through programs that foster creativity, wellness, and opportunity. We’re excited to continue building on this momentum as we mark our 10th anniversary.”

Over the past 10 years, KDA has achieved numerous milestones, including advocating for key legislation like California Senate Bill 916 and Proposition 28 to secure dance’s place in public school curricula. In 2025, KDA played a pivotal role in the approval of the single-subject dance teaching credential at California State University, Bakersfield, the first in the Central Valley. As home to the region’s only National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) secondary chapter, KDA promotes artistic excellence and leadership among youth.

KDA’s pioneering programs address systemic inequities and promote holistic development:

  • SHINE: DANCE + MATH = SUCCESS boosts girls’ math proficiency and confidence in STEAM fields.
  • Books in Motion: DANCE + LITERACY has engaged over 20,000 children since 2016, distributing nearly 15,000 free books to combat illiteracy in at-risk communities.
  • ADAPTIdance: DANCE + DISABILITY offers adaptive classes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, culminating in performances like “Defying Gravity” at the Historic Bakersfield Fox Theater.
  • MemoryMOVES: DANCE + THERAPY supports Alzheimer’s patients and those with dementia through therapeutic movement.
