DANCING YOUR WAY TO COLLEGE: A crash course in planning your dance future

It is never too early to begin thinking about college.  Community service, SATs, scholarships, application essays, and auditions are all ingredients necessary to score admission to the college or university of your choice!  KDA is pleased to partner with California Institute for the Arts (CALArts), Dr. Kim Flachmann- Writing Program Coordinator at CSUB, and Kat Clowes, CEO + Founder March Consulting, for an afternoon of planning your dance future.  This special event will outline the essential components needed to help you succeed, AND as a special perk, high school junior and seniors interested in CALArts enrollment may use the sample audition class as an official audition!

1:00-2:00 College Admission Essentials with Kat Clowes

Wondering what it takes to create a stand-out college application? Not sure when you should start each step?  Worried about how you’ll afford college with soaring tuition costs?  Kat Clowes will answer all of this and more!  She’ll cover the modern college application process, how to create an application that stands out from the crowd and get the attention of admissions officers, dispel common admissions myths, and teach you how to maximize scholarships to afford college tuition.

2:00-3:00 College Writing with Dr. Kim Flachmann

Most college and university admission applications require an essay. Dr. Flachmann will explain the reason for the college essay, what you need to accomplish in the essay, and how you can use the essay to your advantage.

3:00-3:15 Break + Light Refreshments

3:15-5pm Performing Arts Major Overview + Sample Audition Class with CALArts

The CalArts, Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance will conduct a Ballet sample Audition Class as well as an Information Session to discuss and give an overview of the dance program. Two CalArts representatives will be in attendance.

GUEST BIOGRAPHIES

Kat Clowes is the CEO of March Consulting, an educational consulting firm that helps students with the college admissions process, financial aid, and helping students figure out what they want to be when they grow up.  She holds an MBA from Mount Saint Mary’s University, a BA in Communications from Santa Clara University, and a post-graduate certificate in Independent Educational Consulting from UC Irvine.   She’s the author of Put College to Work, detailing how students can maximize their time in college in a way that will prepare them for a successful career.  Learn more: www.mymarchconsulting.com

Dr. Kim Flachmann is the director of the Writing Program at CSUB.  She earned her Ph.D. in English at the University of Oregon, where she also performed in the University of Oregon Dance Company.  She loves teaching writing because writing helps people get what they want out of life.  She works very closely with the high schools and community colleges in our county so the local students have a seamless experience in their writing instruction.

CalArts Representatives:

Faculty – Laurence Blake, Interim Dean and Ballet Technique Instructor

Staff – Ebony Ruffin, Admissions Counselor, The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance

Laurence Blake is a native of Virginia and trained at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Upon graduation he joined the North Carolina Dance Theater and later the Joffrey Ballet.  He has been resident choreographer for the Hawaii Ballet Theater, Los Angeles Chamber Ballet and Inland Pacific Ballet.  Blake is currently the associate director of the Pasadena Dance Theater. He has received the National Choreography Plan Award from Regional Dance America/Pacific in 1998. He has taught at Loyola Marymont University, Orange County High School of the Arts and Ballet-Kadiem in Stockholm. Laurence has been a member of the faculty of The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts since 1980, where he has taught ballet technique and now serves as the Interim Dean.

Ebony Ruffin is originally form Los Angeles, CA and received her dance training from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. She received her BFA in Dance from NYU, Tisch School of the Arts and MFA in Dance and Choreography from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Ebony has performed professionally with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Andrea E. Woods/Souloworks and Dancers, nathantrice/Rituals, Hope Boykin and the Brockus Dance Project. As an Arts Administrator, she has worked in many facets for The Ailey School and The Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation. She is currently the Admissions Counselor for The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts.
