Bruce Steivel presents a special one evening performance of “Dracula The Ballet” by Bay Pointe Ballet:

October 23rd at 8:00pm at the historic Fox Theater

Based on the novel by Bram Stoker and brought to life by Bruce Steivel’s innovative choreography, this haunting tale of Dracula’s eternal search for the woman he loves will have you on the edge of your seat. In case you were wondering… yes, costumes are allowed and encouraged at all Dracula performances!

Performance is recommended for adults and children 13 years and older due to mature themes.

“Dance + Talk” with Tiler Peck

One of America’s favorite ballerinas and Bakersfield native, Tiler Peck, will be partnering with Kern Dance Alliance to host a Master Class and Q/A!

Tiler Peck was born in Bakersfield, California where she began her dance training at the age of two at her mother’s studio. In 2004, at the age of 14, Ms. Peck entered the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, full time. In September 2004, Ms. Peck became an apprentice with the New York City Ballet and in February 2005 she joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet. She was promoted to Soloist in December 2006 and Principal Dancer in October 2009. She is currently enjoying her 6th year as a Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet.

Tiler made her Broadway debut as Gracie Shinn in Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man at the age of 11. She has been seen as a guest star on Dancing With The Stars for 2 seasons, had the pleasure of being a guest on Bravo’s TV show Rocco’s Dinner Party, and stars in the film Ballet 422.

Tiler had the honor of performing for President Obama at the 2012 and 2014 Kennedy Center Honors and portrayed the role of Louise in the Emmy nominated 2013 production of New York Philharmonic’s Live From Lincoln Center production of Carousel. Tiler recently played the title role in Susan Stroman’s newest musical, Little Dancer, at the Kennedy Center and was seen on Broadway as Ivy Smith in On The Town.

Ms. Peck is the 2004 Mae L. Wien Award winner, the Janice Levin Honoree for 2006-2007, winner of the Leonide Massine’s Positano Premia La Danza for International Emerging Artists, a 2004 recipient of the Princess Grace Foundation- USA Dance Fellowship, and a 2013 Princess Grace Statue Award Winner. In 2013, she was named Forbes 30 under 30 in Hollywood Entertainment. Ms. Peck is also designer of Tiler Peck Designs.

In partnership with the Bakersfield Homeless Center, Garden Pathways Organization, the Boys and Girls Club, the Fox Theater Foundation, and local dance organizations, KDA will host performances and dance classes at the Fox Theater for underserved children.

The Children’s Dance Education and Outreach Program @ The Fox Theater is aimed at providing an opportunity for underserved children to enhance development by experiencing live arts performances and classes.  Children will be invited to the Fox Theater to view a professional dance performance, participate in a Q & A session with the performers, and partake in a dance class on stage.

CHILDREN’S DANCE EDUCATION AND OUTREACH EVENT @ THE FOX THEATER

Kern Dance Alliance is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Children’s Dance Education and Outreach Day at the Fox Theater on Thursday, November 17, 2016.  This special event benefits local children from the Bakersfield Homeless CenterCASAGarden PathwaysBoys and Girls Club, and other organizations that serve socially+  economically disadvantaged children by providing them with afternoon of dance at one of Kern County’s most treasured theaters.

Sponsored by the Arts Council of Kern and the Fox Theater Foundation, the Children’s Dance Education and Outreach Event provides children with a live dance performance, dance class/choreography, and the opportunity to perform on the Fox stage.  Additionally, children learn about the history of the Fox and are provided with snacks donated by Grimmway Farms.

PERFORMERS WANTED
KDA needs your help in producing this event!  We believe in providing dancers with special opportunities to perform in circumstances that are not always available, and the Children’s Dance Education and Outreach Event happens to be one of those special opportunities.

KDA is seeking dancers and dance organizations to provide performances (minimum 1 minute- maximum 3 minutes) and to assist the KDA Board of Directors with the children’s dance class. Solos, group numbers, diverse dances and techniques ranging from ballet to hip hop, cultural, folk, and social dances are all welcome to apply.  There is no cost to YOU or YOUR organization, KDA simply asks for your volunteered time to make this event great!

Deadline to apply is Friday, November 4 at 10:00 PM.

A DAY OF SERVICE
The Children’s Dance Education and Outreach Event is a day of service dedicated to our community children. KDA understands that this event may conflict with dancer’s school commitments, however; KDA has created an official waiver allowing dancers to take the day off from school. KDA recommends making accommodations with school teachers and administrators to submit work early.

Need community service?  KDA will happily sign off on all community service requests.

DANCING YOUR WAY TO COLLEGE: A crash course in planning your dance future [Postponed until 2017]

It is never too early to begin thinking about college.  Community service, SATs, scholarships, application essays, and auditions are all ingredients necessary to score admission to the college or university of your choice!  KDA is pleased to partner with California Institute for the Arts (CALArts), Dr. Kim Flachmann- Writing Program Coordinator at CSUB, and Kat Clowes, CEO + Founder March Consulting, for an afternoon of planning your dance future.  This special event will outline the essential components needed to help you succeed, AND as a special perk, high school junior and seniors interested in CALArts enrollment may use the sample audition class as an official audition!

EVENT ITINERARY

1:00-2:00 College Admission Essentials with Kat Clowes

Wondering what it takes to create a stand-out college application? Not sure when you should start each step?  Worried about how you’ll afford college with soaring tuition costs?  Kat Clowes will answer all of this and more!  She’ll cover the modern college application process, how to create an application that stands out from the crowd and get the attention of admissions officers, dispel common admissions myths, and teach you how to maximize scholarships to afford college tuition.

2:00-3:00 College Writing with Dr. Kim Flachmann

Most college and university admission applications require an essay. Dr. Flachmann will explain the reason for the college essay, what you need to accomplish in the essay, and how you can use the essay to your advantage.

3:00-3:15 Break + Light Refreshments

3:15-5pm Performing Arts Major Overview + Sample Audition Class with CALArts

The CalArts, Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance will conduct a Ballet sample Audition Class as well as an Information Session to discuss and give an overview of the dance program. Two CalArts representatives will be in attendance.

DANCE CLASS ATTIRE

  • Females – Form fitting clothing, preferably leotards and tights. Yoga pants, bicycle shorts and form fitting tops are also acceptable.  Please NO BAGGY DANCEWEAR.
  • Males – Form fitting clothing, preferably tee shirts, jazz pants/black tights.  Dance belt, if needed or suspenders to hold up tights. Gym shorts and/or bicycle shorts are also acceptable. Please NO BAGGY DANCEWEAR.
  • Feet – shoes will be determined based upon the specific class
  • Hair – Hair must be swept back and secured properly.
  • Safety Clause – No gum or wrist/finger jewelry is allowed during class.  Please be prepared to have kneepads for every class.

GUEST BIOGRAPHIES

Kat Clowes is the CEO of March Consulting, an educational consulting firm that helps students with the college admissions process, financial aid, and helping students figure out what they want to be when they grow up.  She holds an MBA from Mount Saint Mary’s University, a BA in Communications from Santa Clara University, and a post-graduate certificate in Independent Educational Consulting from UC Irvine.   She’s the author of Put College to Work, detailing how students can maximize their time in college in a way that will prepare them for a successful career.  Learn more: www.mymarchconsulting.com

Dr. Kim Flachmann is the director of the Writing Program at CSUB.  She earned her Ph.D. in English at the University of Oregon, where she also performed in the University of Oregon Dance Company.  She loves teaching writing because writing helps people get what they want out of life.  She works very closely with the high schools and community colleges in our county so the local students have a seamless experience in their writing instruction.

Laurence Blake is a native of Virginia and trained at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Upon graduation he joined the North Carolina Dance Theater and later the Joffrey Ballet.  He has been resident choreographer for the Hawaii Ballet Theater, Los Angeles Chamber Ballet and Inland Pacific Ballet.  Blake is currently the associate director of the Pasadena Dance Theater. He has received the National Choreography Plan Award from Regional Dance America/Pacific in 1998. He has taught at Loyola Marymont University, Orange County High School of the Arts and Ballet-Kadiem in Stockholm. Laurence has been a member of the faculty of The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts since 1980, where he has taught ballet technique and now serves as the Interim Dean.

Ebony Ruffin is originally form Los Angeles, CA and received her dance training from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. She received her BFA in Dance from NYU, Tisch School of the Arts and MFA in Dance and Choreography from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Ebony has performed professionally with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Andrea E. Woods/Souloworks and Dancers, nathantrice/Rituals, Hope Boykin and the Brockus Dance Project. As an Arts Administrator, she has worked in many facets for The Ailey School and The Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation. She is currently the Admissions Counselor for The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts.

Dance Camp Overview

The Summer Dance Camp: Arts + Mentoring is rooted in the mission to mentor young people through the arts, specifically dance.  Through the guidance of professionals in the field, dancers will be encouraged to explore a variety of dance related resources to further develop their dance education.   Dancers will train in technical dance disciplines, learn about anatomy and injury prevention, dance history, music theory, dynamics, aesthetics, body awareness, and performance.

A final dance showcase will culminate the camp. Students will have the opportunity to perform material developed during the camp.  Camp Mentors will outline their experiences, influences, and expertise in the field of dance and a Q&A session will be available for students and the audience to pose questions.

Dance Camp Dress Code:

KDA is teaming up with the League of Dreams to bring the first dance + disability program, danceABILITY, to Kern County. Led by one of the world’s most acclaimed and innovative ensembles of performers with and without disabilities, AXIS Dance Company will inspire diverse populations to dance. The AXIS residency will provide creative dance classes, a professional development course geared toward educators working with diverse populations, and a professional dance performance.

AXIS Dance Company Youth Class 1:00 – 2:30 pm

AXIS Dance Company dancers will teach students the company’s form of inclusive creative dance that is accessible to kids with and without physical disabilities. In the class, students will have the opportunity to explore their own dance vocabulary, build confidence, practice cooperation, and develop appreciation of each other’s creative expression.

YOUTH CLASS REGISTRATION

AXIS Dance Company Family Matinee Performance 3:00 – 3:45 pm

AXIS Dance Company offers mind-opening family performance programs showcasing innovative choreography that emphasizes collaboration among people of all physical abilities. This performance will include interactive participation by audience members, and a candid Q&A with AXIS dancers about dance and disability. The program includes “Just add Water” a whimsical how-to guide for making and appreciating dance. A blend of poetry and camp, this work is intended for families but can be enjoyed by anyone wishing to demystify the dance making process!

AXIS Dance Company Teacher Training in Physically Integrated Dance 5:00 – 8:00 pm

The Fundamentals AXIS Dance Company offers this exciting, movement-based workshop geared toward teachers and faculty working with diverse populations, with the goal of introducing inclusive dance practices and sensitivity. The session includes learning and experiencing participatory exercises and activities for use in classrooms as well as discussion about disability, language, and the development of AXIS’ extraordinary inclusive community education program.

Bay Pointe Ballet Summer Intensive Auditions

KDA will host auditions for the 2017 Bay Pointe Ballet Summer Intensive.  Located in San Francisco, dancers (8 years +) are invited to audition for the summer session: July 10-August 4.  Housing is located at the San Francisco State University dormitories for ages 14+.  Two and four-week summer intensive attendance is available.

KDA is proud to partner with Team Bank of the Sierra of the Ford Dimension Dream Builders Program on their project, S.T.E.P., a Senior Targeted Exercise Program focused on reducing muscle degenerative diseases. The workshop will be presented by specialists who will demonstrate and speak on physical therapy exercises, Dance/Movement Therapy, nutritional and mental health aspects to promote healthy and active lifestyles. The event is free and open to the public.

Diane Campbell- Registered Dietitian

Diane is originally from Canada but has been in Bakersfield for 18 years. She has been been a RD for 21 years and has worked in many aspects in dietetics including acute care and long term care. Diane had her own business for 17 years where she helped young adolescents overcome eating disorders. Now she is at Adventist Health Bakersfield Hospital in the Wellness Center. In the Wellness Center, she sees patients who need help with diabetes, weight loss, malnutrition, food allergies, high cholesterol and many other medical conditions. Diane loves being a Dietitian and she loves food…. Real food that is!! Let food be your medicine as good nutrition can change and improve quality of life.

Elena Rezai- Dance/Movement Therapist

Elena grew up in California and started dancing at the age of 5. She received her BA in Dance from UC Irvine, and went on to receive her MA in Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling from Columbia College Chicago. She has used her experience as a Dance/Movement Therapist in a number of inpatient and outpatient hospital settings and care facilities, working with people from a diversity of backgrounds and age-groups.  She loves building community through movement, and facilitating spaces where movement can foster the physical, emotional and mental integration of the individual.

Punsalan is a Neurology Nurse Practitioner for the Kern County Medical group where she fulfills the duties of evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients with various neurological symptoms. Punsalan is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and has received the prestigious Summa Cum Laude honor at Lakeville College. Punsalan also holds a Master of Science in Nursing degree from the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science where she completed 650 total clinical hours in Internal Medicine, Primary and Urgent Care, Pediatrics, Women’s Health, and Neurology.

Tim Terrio is the Founder and President of TERRIO Physical Therapy-Fitness, Inc. As a Physical Therapist, Certified Athletic Trainer and Certified Strength Coach for over 20 years, Terrio has personally assisted thousands of clients to recover function after injury or surgery and has earned a reputation for solving complex problems with innovative solutions. An advocate of lifelong learning, Terrio has a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and Masters Degree in Physical Education with an Athletic Training emphasis.

 

 


 

BEHIND THE SCENES: The Joffrey Ballet Romeo and Juliet

MemoryMOVES: DANCE + THERAPY

Alzheimer’s Disease Association of Kern County, Inc.

KDA has partnered with the Alzheimer’s Disease Association of Kern County, Inc. (ADAKC) by offering MemoryMOVES: DANCE + THERAPY for memory-impaired clients. In collaboration with registered Dance/Movement Therapist, Elena Rezai, MemoryMOVES will utilize Dance/Movement Therapy as a modality of support and offer clients, staff and caregivers alike, a glimpse into the transformative power of movement. Registration opens March 1.

NATIONAL DANCE DAY

KDA Dance Studio at Garces Memorial High School

10 hours. 10 dance classes. $2 a class. KDA is setting the dance floor on fire this summer in celebration of National Dance Day! Dance classes will vary from beginning to advanced and range in dance disciplines.

SHINE for Girls is a nationally recognized, innovative, curriculum-based, after-school program for middle school girls. Utilizing kinesthetic learning, SHINE combines formal dance training with rigorous math instruction to improve girls’ math scores and spark their interest in STEM careers.

Summer 2018

In collaboration with the Kern County Library, Kern Literary Council, and Barnes and Noble, Books in Motion links dance and literacy for children, Kindergarten-3rd grade. Focused on Common Core Standards in Reading Literature, families are invited to attend Kern County Library branches to see their favorite stories come to life through dance performance.

ADAPTIdance: DANCE + DISABILITY

Fall 2018
KDA Dance Studio at Garces Memorial High School

KDA and the League of Dreams will offer ADAPTIdance, an adaptive dance program for Kern County residents.

Participants will learn inclusive, creative dance that is accessible for movers with and without cognitive and physical disabilities. This program will culminate with a performance at the historic Bakersfield Fox Theater. ADAPTIdance is the only dance and disability program available for children with cognitive and physical disabilities in Kern County.

Registration for dancers and ADAPTidance dance interns open September 1.

CHILDREN’S DANCE EDUCATION AND OUTREACH EVENT

Bakersfield Fox Theater

The Children’s Dance Education + Outreach Event provides socioeconomically disadvantaged children the chance to experience an afternoon of dance. Children are invited to the Fox Theater to view professional dance performances, participate in a Q & A session with the performers, partake in a dance class, and perform on stage.
